This article explains how to configure shipping costs and how they are applied to orders in your store.
Shipping cost settings consist of two main sections:
-
Calculation Settings – how shipping is calculated when an order contains multiple items
-
Cost Configuration – how shipping costs are defined by default and by country
Calculation Settings
Calculation Settings control how shipping costs are calculated when a customer orders multiple items with different shipping costs.
Available Calculation Methods
Sum All Line Items
-
Adds the shipping cost of each item in the order.
-
Each product’s shipping cost is counted separately.
Example
-
T-Shirt: $5.99
-
Hoodie: $8.99
-
Total shipping cost: $14.98
Use this option if products are shipped separately or have independent fulfillment costs.
Use Highest Cost
-
Applies only the highest shipping cost among all items in the order.
-
Lower total shipping cost for customers.
Example
-
T-Shirt: $5.99
-
Hoodie: $8.99
-
Total shipping cost: $8.99
Use this option if items are usually shipped together.
Changes in this section are saved automatically.
Cost Configuration
Cost Configuration defines how much shipping costs based on default rules or shipping zones.
Default Shipping Cost
The Default Shipping Cost is applied when an order does not match any shipping zone.
-
Enter a fixed shipping cost
-
Used as a fallback for all unmatched orders
If no shipping zone applies, the system will always use the Default Shipping Cost.
Shipping Zones
Shipping Zones allow you to define shipping costs based on destination countries.
How Shipping Zones Work
-
Each zone contains one or more countries
-
Each zone has its own default shipping cost
-
Countries can only belong to one zone
If an order’s shipping country matches a zone, the zone’s rules are applied.
Product-Specific Shipping Costs (Optional)
Within a zone, you can assign custom shipping costs to specific products.
-
Products listed in the zone use their assigned cost
-
Products not listed use the zone’s default shipping cost
Example
-
My Shirt: $100
-
Other products: $150 (zone default)
Shipping Cost Priority
Shipping costs are applied in the following order:
-
Product-specific shipping cost (inside a matching zone)
-
Zone default shipping cost
-
Default Shipping Cost (if no zone matches)
Updating Shipping Costs for Existing Orders
If you update shipping settings, you can recalculate shipping costs for existing orders.
-
Recalculates shipping based on current settings
-
Updates profit and margin for historical orders
-
Processing time depends on the number of orders
Summary
-
Calculation Settings control shipping behavior for multi-item orders
-
Default Shipping Cost is used when no zone matches
-
Shipping Zones apply country-based and product-based rules
-
Shipping cost priority ensures consistent and predictable calculations
